Prosecutors plan to pursue an adult case against Anthony Rivers III, 15, who was arrested in connection with a Tallahassee shooting that injured 12 people. Police said Rivers was arrested Oct. 25, the day after the shooting, and announced the arrest and charges on Oct. 26.
The shooting happened near Perry and Manatee streets in Tallahassee at about 8 p.m. on Oct. 24. Police said 11 people were shot and a 12th injured an ankle while fleeing. The initial police account identified six adults and six juveniles among those injured.
Police said Rivers faces 11 counts of attempted second-degree murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a delinquent. The injury total and the attempted-murder count are different measures: police reported 12 people hurt, while the announced charges include 11 attempted-murder counts and a separate firearm count. The charges are allegations, not findings of guilt.
The Associated Press reported that State Attorney Jack Campbell said prosecutors would move the case to adult court. WTXL reported Campbell had decided to prosecute Rivers as an adult. Those reports describe the intended course of the case; they do not establish that the transfer has been completed.
Detention and court restrictions
At a detention hearing on Oct. 26, a judge ordered Rivers to remain in detention and barred him from direct or indirect contact with victims and witnesses. WTXL reported that the judge also ordered his phone calls monitored, except calls with his attorney, barred him from using social media and granted policeโs request to seal the arrest affidavit.
WTXL reported an arraignment was initially scheduled for Nov. 16, but Campbell expected that date to change as the case moved to adult court. The report did not give a replacement date.
Police describe investigation as active
Police said preliminary findings indicate a physical altercation preceded the shooting and that investigators believe the dispute involved people who knew one another. Police also said none of the injured appeared to be intended targets. Those are preliminary investigative assessments, not established findings.
The investigation remains open, police said, and additional arrests are possible.
