White House quantum order sets deadlines on strategy, sensors, workforce
United States Late Federal Documents and Court Orders – Executive Order 14413 directs agencies to update the National Quantum Strategy and plan workforce, sensor, and supply-chain steps. ([whitehouse.gov](https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/executive-orders/))
The White House issued Executive Order 14413, Ushering in the Next Frontier of Quantum Innovation, on June 22, 2026, and it appeared in the Federal Register on June 25.
The order treats quantum information science and technology as both a national security and economic issue. It directs the government to push quantum research toward commercialization, deployment, manufacturing, and application, while tightening protections around sensitive technology.
What federal agencies have to do
Within 180 days, the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology must update the National Quantum Strategy, and agencies must then report how they are aligning their programs. The order also sets deadlines for quantum sensors and networking, supply-chain planning, and private-sector partnership work.
Some deadlines are near-term: the War Department must identify at least three next-generation quantum sensor projects within 60 days; Energy must help set technical specifications for a quantum-computer effort within 90 days; and OPM, Labor, NSF, Commerce, and others have workforce, security, and supply-chain deadlines that run from 90 to 210 days.
Why it matters
For contractors, labs, startups, and universities, the practical effects are likely to show up later through strategy updates, procurement signals, workforce programs, security guidance, and supply-chain planning. The White House says the effort should expand apprenticeships, credentials, and National QIST Workforce Development Institutes.
This is the innovation side of the federal quantum push, separate from the same-day order on post-quantum cryptography. Together, the two orders show Washington trying to move both the future quantum economy and the security transition at the same time.
