$11.3 million US 24 resurfacing project remains active near Calhan through September

An $11.3 million Colorado Department of Transportation project remains active on US 24 between east of Peyton and Calhan, with construction expected to continue through September 2026.

The project covers approximately 10 miles between mile points 332 and 342.5 in El Paso County. As of Aug. 8, work was continuing on resurfacing and safety improvements along the town-adjacent route used by Calhan residents, farm operators, freight traffic and commuters.

What the project includes

Schmidt Construction Co. is the contractor for the project. The work includes minor culvert improvements, curb and gutter replacement, a new passing lane east of Calhan and a widened right-turn lane at Yoder Street.

CDOT says the completed project is intended to improve pavement condition as well as intersection and passing safety near Calhan. The work is not limited to Calhan town limits; the project extends from east of Peyton to Calhan.

What drivers should expect

Night work is scheduled Sunday through Thursday from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. through September 2026. Daytime work was scheduled Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from April through July.

Two-way traffic is intended to remain in place where possible, but CDOT warns that delays of up to 15 minutes may occur. Drivers should also account for lower speeds in and outside the town area: the limit is reduced to 25 mph in town and 40 mph outside town through the work zone.

Loads wider than 11 feet are restricted through the construction area. That restriction is especially relevant to farm operators, freight traffic and other drivers moving oversized equipment or materials on US 24.

Completion window

The project’s active construction period runs from April 1 through Sept. 30, 2026, with September identified as the expected completion window. That is not a guaranteed completion date, and the current project record does not provide an August work-week schedule or a percentage of completion.

For people traveling between Peyton, Calhan and destinations along US 24, the practical effect is continued construction activity, nighttime work, reduced speeds and the possibility of added travel time through the end of the stated project window.
