State esports tournament comes to Aberdeen Central
Aberdeen Central High School will be the center of the state esports scene next week as it hosts the statewide tournament on Feb. 13 and 14. The Golden Eagles are sending two undefeated teams into the competition, and they will enjoy home advantage with matches played in the schoolโs esports facility. School leaders say hosting again is a point of pride and a chance to showcase how quickly the program has grown.
The event will bring players, coaches, and families from around South Dakota to town over two days. Local supporters are encouraged to turn out, as organizers note that a strong crowd helps give the home teams an edge and introduces more residents to a fastโgrowing high school activity.
Full Saturday of events across Aberdeen
Todayโs calendar is packed for anyone looking to get out of the house. A winter vendor and craft fair is scheduled from midโmorning into early afternoon, offering handmade goods, food, and a warm indoor spot to browse. Sports fans have options too, with youth hockey action at the Odde Ice Center and a mite jamboree running through the day.
Outdoor and recreation enthusiasts can stop by the Frozen Foote 3D archery shoot, which features familyโfriendly target courses, or visit the Dakota Territory Gun Collectors Show. Later in the day, Northern State Universityโs womenโs basketball team is slated to host MSU Moorhead, adding a college matchup to the local lineup.
Library hosts colorful Body Art Day
The K.O. Lee Aberdeen Public Library is leaning into fun this morning with a special family Body Art Day from 10 a.m. to noon. The dropโin program offers temporary tattoos, glowโinโtheโdark body paint, and henna art, along with other kidโfriendly activities. Library staff say the event is designed as a lowโpressure way for families to be creative together during the winter months.
Body Art Day is part of a broader slate of earlyโyear programs at the library, which also includes reading challenges, yoga sessions, and baby story times. Many of these activities are free and open to the public, giving residents another reason to make the library a regular weekend stop.
Weather and week ahead
After light snow and colder air on Friday, Aberdeen is settling into a quieter, more typical earlyโFebruary pattern this weekend. Forecasts call for mostly cloudy skies with highs in the 30s and lows in the teens, with no major storms on the immediate horizon. City meetings, including an upcoming airport board session and council and planning gatherings later this month, will keep local government busy as residents ease into the rest of February.
