Alameda Streetlight Work Brings Temporary Parking, Traffic Changes

Streetlight construction is scheduled within an active mid-July-to-mid-October window on three Alameda corridors, where residents and drivers may see temporary parking restrictions, lane shifts, noise and dust.

The City of Alameda project will replace underground streetlight conduit, electrical conductors and pull boxes. Work was scheduled to begin in mid-July 2026 and is expected to continue through mid-October, although the timing may vary by block and construction conditions.

Where work is planned

The largest listed segment is Moreland Drive between Fernside Boulevard and Buena Vista Avenue. The project also covers portions of Cornell Drive and Thompson Avenue.

Construction activity is limited to weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents, visitors and commuters should watch for posted signs and notices near the specific areas where crews are scheduled to work.

Parking and access impacts

Door-hanger notices may be distributed before work reaches a specific area. Temporary no-parking signs are expected to be posted at least 72 hours before construction begins there.

People who normally park along the affected streets may need to move their vehicles when the temporary signs are posted. The restrictions are tied to construction activity and do not represent permanent parking removal.

Drivers may also encounter short-term lane shifts or minor delays near active work zones. The city identifies possible construction noise and dust, with impacts expected to vary depending on the work area and the day’s activities.

Project cost and contractor

Alameda City Council authorized an agreement with Ray’s Electric for the work. The agreement has a not-to-exceed amount of $527,707, including contingency.

A city procurement listing places the project’s approximate construction cost at about $520,000. That figure differs from the council-authorized maximum because the authorized amount includes contingency funds.

The project is focused on replacing underground streetlight infrastructure along the identified corridors. Residents should continue checking posted signs and the City of Alameda project notice for block-specific timing, parking restrictions and access information as crews move through the work area.
