Public safety: Gas station standoff ends peacefully
Allen Park police say a man who barricaded himself inside a gas station at Allen and Southfield roads Friday afternoon is now in custody after an hourslong standoff. Officers and a SWAT team responded after the man, armed with a knife, left a nearby restaurant and entered the station, prompting a large law enforcement presence and temporary road closures. Police evacuated employees and customers before negotiators worked to resolve the situation without injuries reported. ๎cite๎turn1search6๎
Investigators said they believed they knew the manโs identity during the incident and were able to take him into custody inside the station. More information on his name and possible charges is expected once the case is reviewed by prosecutors, but police say there is no ongoing threat to the community this weekend. ๎cite๎turn1search6๎
Traffic & commuting: Restore I-94 work moving ahead
State transportation officials are preparing to launch the Restore I-94 project between I-275 and US-12 later this month, a multi-year rebuilding effort that will affect drivers in Romulus, Taylor, Allen Park, Melvindale, Dearborn Heights and Dearborn. Early work will focus on clearing and preparing medians and shoulders so traffic can be shifted for future construction. One or two lanes in each direction are expected to remain open, but motorists should plan for slower travel and changing patterns through at least 2029. ๎cite๎turn1search5๎
A public open house is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Taylor City Hall, where staff will outline timelines, detours and neighborhood impacts. Residents and business owners from Allen Park and nearby communities are encouraged to attend, ask questions and share concerns before major lane closures begin. ๎cite๎turn1search5๎

Allen Park edged Lincoln Park 27โ20 in a low-scoring defensive battle, while Allen Park Cabrini earned a 60โ52 win over Madison Heights Bishop Foley, adding to a strong winter run for the program. ๎cite๎turn1search4๎turn1search7๎
The wins came on a packed night of boys and girls hoops across the Detroit metro area, with league races tightening as teams head into the middle of February. Both Allen Park programs remain in the mix as conference play resumes next week. ๎cite๎turn1search1๎
