Winter Wonderland Event at Prewett Library

Antioch’s Prewett Library is hosting a ‘Winter Wonderland’ event today, January 31, 2026, at 12:00 PM. The event features tree decorating with paper snowflakes and offers winter-themed craft kits for children and teens. The craft kits are available while supplies last and are suitable for various age groups, including children aged 6 to 9, preschoolers aged 3 to 5, teens aged 13 to 18, and tweens aged 9 to 12. This initiative aims to engage the community in festive activities during the winter months.

City’s Efforts to Address Gun Violence

The city of Antioch is actively exploring new strategies to combat gun violence. Council members are considering a set of recommendations that go beyond identifying individuals at risk of committing gun-related crimes. The proposed plan includes providing these individuals with 18 months of intensive mentorship, job training, and financial support to help them pursue alternative paths. This approach seeks to build trust and offer tangible resources to those affected by gun violence. A report by the Hope & Heal Fund highlighted that Antioch has a higher rate of gun crimes compared to similar-sized cities, with more than one gun used in a crime every day. The report suggests that implementing these strategies could reduce crime by 20% to 55% over 18 months. Despite a decrease in gun violence last year, recent incidents, including the shooting of an 11-year-old girl, have raised new concerns. Council members believe that these strategies, proven effective in other cities, could help curb crime in Antioch as well.
