APS Families Have Four Days Before Albuquerque Schools Reopen Aug. 7
Albuquerque Public Schools families have four days as of Monday, Aug. 3, to finish or verify registration before most students are scheduled to return for the 2026-27 school year.
Students in first through 12th grade are scheduled to begin classes Friday, Aug. 7. Pre-K and kindergarten students have a separate first day: Tuesday, Aug. 11. Aug. 3-6 are professional-development days for APS teachers and staff, with no school for students.
ParentVUE is the main checklist
APS directs families to ParentVUE, the district’s student information system, for online registration and annual information verification. Families can use a computer, phone or tablet to review student records, update household information and upload required documents.
Families should check each child’s address, phone number, email address and emergency contacts. APS says it uses the contact information in ParentVUE to communicate with families, including during emergencies.
Required documents vary by a student’s circumstances. APS lists possible proof-of-residency documents such as a New Mexico driver’s license, deed or mortgage payment receipt, property-tax bill, lease or housing agreement, or utility bill. Families should follow APS registration instructions for their individual situation rather than assume the same documents apply to every student.
Families with more than one child can use one ParentVUE account to update information for all of their students. APS says families who have trouble registering should contact their child’s school.
Check transportation information now
Families who use district transportation should review APS Student Transportation Services before the first day. The district provides tools to locate a student’s bus stop, bus number and bus arrival time, along with information about routes, school-bus rules and transportation contacts.
APS transportation eligibility is based on distance from the student’s school of residence. The district lists thresholds of more than 2 miles for high school students, more than 1.5 miles for middle school and K-8 students, and more than 1 mile for elementary students. APS says it does not provide school-bus transportation to transfer students.
Families with route or stop questions can contact APS Student Transportation Services at (505) 298-6831. When contacting the department, APS asks families to provide the student’s name, student ID number, bus number and school of attendance when available.
Two opening dates to keep straight
The immediate deadline is different depending on the student’s grade level:
- Friday, Aug. 7, 2026: First through 12th grade.
- Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026: Pre-K and kindergarten.
Before the applicable first day, APS families should log in to ParentVUE, complete registration, upload any required documents, verify phone and email information, confirm emergency contacts and review transportation details if applicable. The APS 2026-27 calendar is the controlling reference for the two scheduled student start dates.
