Albuquerque I-25 traffic shift starts June 4 between Candelaria and Montgomery
Albuquerque NM – Northbound I-25 lanes shifted June 4-5, southbound lanes are set for June 12, and overnight closures continue between Candelaria and Montgomery.
Drivers on north Albuquerque’s I-25 are in a new work-zone pattern between Candelaria Road and south of Montgomery Boulevard as the latest phase of the corridor project moves forward. According to the New Mexico Department of Transportation, northbound traffic shifted June 4-5, and southbound traffic is scheduled to shift beginning June 12.
The change moves traffic toward the center median so crews can continue work on the outside lanes. For commuters, that means the lane setup has already changed in one direction and will change again in the other, with the most noticeable disruption likely during early morning and evening travel windows.
Overnight closures remain the key pinch point
NMDOT says nighttime lane and ramp closures are still part of the work plan, with restrictions scheduled between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. during the traffic shifts. That makes late trips, shift changes, and cross-town errands more likely to encounter delays than daytime travel.
The southbound Montgomery Boulevard on-ramp remains closed while work continues in the area. For people who use this stretch every day, the practical takeaway is simple: expect a different lane pattern now, and expect more friction after dark.
The project affects one of Albuquerque’s busiest north-south corridors, so even small changes at Montgomery can affect commuting time, access to nearby businesses, and the flow of drivers crossing the corridor from one side of town to the other.
Anyone heading through the area should give themselves extra time, especially after 8 p.m., and check current traffic conditions before leaving.
