Arundel residents can comment on Route 111 signal-backplate project through Aug. 14

Arundel residents, businesses and people who regularly use Route 111 can comment through August 14, 2026, on a Maine Department of Transportation project to replace traffic-signal equipment at several intersections.

What MaineDOT is proposing

The project, called Biddeford-Alfred, Route 111 Traffic Signal Backplate Replacement, carries Work Identification Number 029378.00. MaineDOT’s formal notice names Arundel, in York County, along with Biddeford and Alfred as the municipalities covered by the project.

The proposed work would replace existing traffic-signal heads with new housings and reflective backplates. The notice describes the work as taking place at several Route 111 intersections but does not identify every intersection in the accessible project materials.

How to submit comments

MaineDOT is using an on-demand public meeting rather than a meeting held at one specific time. Residents can view the project presentation and submit questions or comments online during the formal comment period, which runs from July 28 through August 14, 2026.

Next milestone is advertisement

MaineDOT’s construction-advertisement schedule, refreshed July 27, lists September 23, 2026, as the project’s current forecast advertisement date. The same schedule lists October 7, 2026, as the plan advertisement date for the project, identified as “BIDDEFORD-ALFRED, ROUTE 111” and located at various locations.

Those dates concern advertising the project for construction bids. They are not a construction start date, a contract award or a completion date. MaineDOT says dates and cost estimates are subject to change as projects are developed. The current public notice does not provide a final in-road work schedule, traffic-control plan or completion date.

Separate from larger Arundel intersection work

The signal-head and backplate project should not be confused with separate planned improvements at the Route 111 and Limerick Road intersection or at the Brimstone Road and Limerick Road junction.

The Local News reported in July that MaineDOT is pursuing a traffic light and an additional turning lane at Route 111 and Limerick Road, while the Brimstone Road and Limerick Road junction is in final design for reconfiguration. Those projects are distinct from WIN 029378.00.

Why it matters locally

For Arundel drivers, Route 111 commuters, nearby businesses and emergency or delivery traffic, the proposed work concerns the visibility equipment at signalized intersections. Replacing housings and adding reflective backplates could affect how signals are seen, but MaineDOT has not said that the work will eliminate crashes or guarantee a particular safety outcome.

Because specific intersections and work-zone details have not yet been published in the notice, residents who have concerns about visibility, access, deliveries or future traffic control should raise them during the comment period.
