Asheville, NC — January 30, 2026 — City officials have announced a projected $30 million budget shortfall for the fiscal year 2027. The shortfall is attributed to increased expenses, including healthcare costs, debt obligations, and post-Hurricane Helene recovery efforts, coupled with slower revenue growth, particularly from sales tax.
Finance Director Tony McDowell highlighted that the shortfall is exacerbated by the use of one-time funds in the current fiscal year and a forthcoming property value revaluation. In response, the City Council has initiated early budget discussions to address the gap and ensure the city’s financial stability.
The projected shortfall underscores the ongoing financial challenges faced by Asheville as it continues to recover from the impacts of Hurricane Helene and manages rising operational costs.
