Athens, OH Daily Briefing: Weather Alerts, Housing Delay and Weekend Highlights

Athens, OH — February 7, 2026 — Frigid weather, local hoops, a housing project delay and a special radio program lead today’s community news.

Good afternoon, Athens. Here’s a quick look at what’s happening around town for Saturday, February 7, 2026.

Snowy Friday, dangerous cold today

A winter weather advisory brought light snow and slick roads to Athens County on Friday, with forecasters calling for up to around two inches of accumulation and tricky travel during the morning and evening commutes.

That system has been followed by a bitter cold snap today. A cold weather advisory is in effect through early afternoon, with wind chills dipping well below zero across the county. Residents are urged to bundle up, limit time outdoors, and check on neighbors who may need help staying warm.

Housing grant window closes after Dairy Lane delay

A paperwork delay on rezoning property along Dairy Lane has pushed back a proposed housing project and cost the city a chance to pursue a roughly $2 million grant with a March 12 deadline.

The rezoning will now move ahead on a more typical schedule, with council readings planned in early and mid March and a final vote expected in early April. Supporters say the project could add needed housing options near key services, while the slower timeline gives neighbors more time to follow and weigh in on the proposal.

Local teams light up the scoreboard

On the college side, Ohio’s men’s basketball team stayed hot at the Convo earlier this week, shooting better than 50 percent from the field and over 40 percent from long range in a 91–71 win over Western Michigan. Multiple Bobcats contributed double figures as the team protected home court and kept momentum in conference play.

High school fans packed McAfee Gym in The Plains on Friday night for another chapter in the Athens–Nelsonville-York rivalry. The Buckeyes completed a season sweep of the Bulldogs, taking advantage of their size inside with Athens missing its starting center and riding a balanced attack to another hard-fought win.

Radio program marks Black History Month

Tonight’s edition of a long-running community radio program will spotlight the centennial of Black History Month with a special three hour block from 6 to 9 p.m. The show will weave together classic jazz recordings and commentary on the history of the observance, first recognized nationally in 1926 and expanded to a month-long celebration in 1976.

Listeners can tune in on local AM radio or online to hear the program, which also highlights the role of music in telling Black history and shaping American culture. It’s a fitting way to close out a frigid winter day with something warm and thoughtful from right here in Athens.
