Bell Street Bridge encampment slated to close March 6

City officials say the long-running homeless encampment under and around the Bell Street Bridge (also known as Coca-Cola Place) is scheduled to begin closing Friday, March 6. The city’s coordinated homeless-response partners said outreach at the site has been ongoing for months, with an emphasis on connecting people to services and safer options.

The closure comes amid heightened scrutiny of how encampments are cleared in Atlanta. Officials said procedures have been updated to focus on more coordinated, compassionate operations, while residents at the site described persistent safety and sanitation concerns, including flooding during heavy rain.

Atlanta police highlight results of multi-agency gang, gun and drug crackdown

Police leaders this week pointed to a set of coordinated enforcement initiatives they say are aimed at repeat violent offenders and hot spots. At a recent briefing, officials said the operations led to 288 arrests in 2025, including arrests of convicted felons and documented gang members, and the seizure of 81 firearms plus about 19 pounds of heroin, methamphetamine and crack cocaine.

Officials also cited citywide trends they attribute in part to data-driven targeting, including declines in homicides since 2022 and fewer nonfatal shootings over the same period.

MARTA service disrupted after shooting at Arts Center station

Transit police investigated a Tuesday morning shooting, March 3, at the Arts Center rail station in Midtown. Officials said a victim was found with a gunshot wound and taken to a hospital; one person was detained in connection with the incident. Rail service was disrupted while the station was closed for several hours before normal operations resumed.

To help riders move around the closure, the agency said it provided rideshare credits for trips between nearby stations during the disruption.

More MARTA changes: on-demand ‘Reach’ launches March 7; East Lake station work advances

Starting Saturday, March 7, MARTA plans to roll out ‘MARTA Reach,’ an app-based, on-demand shared-ride service in 12 zones around metro Atlanta. The agency says rides will be free through March 28, then cost $2.50 per trip.

Meanwhile on the east side, construction continues at East Lake Station. MARTA says the south parking lot closed March 2, with the south entrance and pedestrian bridge slated to close March 9 for replacement work expected to last about two months. Riders will be directed to the north entrance during the closure, with a free shuttle planned between parking areas.
