Aurora daily brief: roadwork, budget closures and spring water rules
Aurora, CO – April 4, 2026 – Roadwork, budget furloughs, spring water rules and tight housing options are shaping Aurora’s local agenda this week.
Aurora heads into April with road projects, budget-related closures, spring water rules and a tight housing picture shaping local public business.
Roads and transit
The city’s latest construction update says the new I-70 and Picadilly Road diverging diamond interchange is now fully open in all directions. Drivers should still expect shifting lane closures across parts of Alameda, Arapahoe, Center, Colfax, Smith, Tower and other corridors through April, and the city says Aurora’s East Colfax bus rapid transit segment is likely to start construction this spring.
Budget and city services
Aurora’s next furlough closure is Friday, April 10. Most municipal offices, libraries, courts and recreation centers will close that day, while essential and emergency services remain open. City budget materials say furloughs are part of the 2026 cost-saving plan adopted after a projected General Fund shortfall of more than $21 million.
Water season is starting
Aurora remains on its normal permanent conservation rules, which limit lawn watering to three days per week. The city also says watering is not allowed between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. from May 1 through Sept. 30, and its Know Your Flow program sends weekly outdoor watering guidance during the April-to-October season.
Housing and schools
Affordable housing remains tight. The Aurora Housing Authority says it usually has fewer than 10 openings in total each month, and most assisted-housing and voucher waitlists are closed. One current exception on its March status page is Fletcher Gardens, which remains open until 200 applications are received. Aurora Public Schools also lists Board of Education meetings on April 7 and April 21, giving residents another public forum to watch in the week ahead.
