Public safety: New police advisory group launches amid oversight debate

The police chief has created a new community panel designed to meet with department leadership every other month to discuss public-safety priorities and major incidents. Police said the group will publish a public summary report after its first year, but the meetings themselves will not be open to the public.

The move arrives while Aurora continues reforms under a state consent decree, and as city leaders debate what long-term oversight should look like once that process ends.

Also in the spotlight: Report alleges problems inside Aurora’s immigration detention center

A coalition of advocacy groups released a report describing detainees’ complaints about food quality, medical care and living conditions at the privately run federal immigration detention facility in Aurora. The report says detainees often need outside money to supplement meals via commissary purchases.

The facility operator disputed the allegations, saying services and standards are monitored and that it provides medical access, approved meals and other support.

Education and jobs: Governor visit highlights new CAST building

Colorado’s governor toured the Community College of Aurora’s Center for Applied Science and Technology, a newer hub for hands-on STEM and skilled trades training. College leaders highlighted the building as a workforce pipeline aimed at connecting students to in-demand, career-ready skills.
