Bakersfield police released year-end figures for organized retail theft, reporting 492 total arrests tied to the department’s dedicated retail theft unit. High winds return to eastern Kern this weekend

After a brief break, forecasters say winds are expected to ramp up again Friday night into Saturday, especially in Kern’s mountain and desert areas. Gusts of roughly 30 to 40 mph are possible in exposed spots, with the potential for stronger bursts near the southwest sides of local mountain ranges. The warning does not cover most of the valley floor, where conditions are expected to stay milder with weekend highs in the 70s.

Farm Day in the City brings classrooms to the fairgrounds

Thousands of local students are getting a close-up look at agriculture during the 42nd annual Farm Day in the City at the Kern County Fairgrounds. The two-day program for second through fourth graders features kid-friendly stations and demonstrations, including seed planting, roping practice, and animal exhibits that connect everyday meals to local farms and ranches.

Science fair winners advance to state and international stages

More than 700 students showcased projects at the Kern County Regional Science Fair at the Dignity Health Convention Center, with more than 200 volunteer judges reviewing entries across grade levels. Top middle and high school projects can move on to the California Science Fair in April, and two high school projects were selected to represent Kern County at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix in May.

Campus and community note

Bakersfield College also hosted Financial Aid Fest this week, bringing campus offices and community partners together to help students navigate aid options and connect with services beyond campus.
