Transit police say a 26-year-old was arrested after allegedly pulling a handgun from his waistband and threatening another rider on a bus along Meridian Street. Authorities said the weapon was a .40-caliber Beretta, and they noted the suspect had a prior firearm-possession conviction. Riders who saw the incident are being urged to report what they witnessed to investigators.
Red Line signal work begins Saturday, with evening delays expected
The MBTA says a multi-phase project to modernize Red Line signals is set to start Saturday, Feb. 28. Riders should plan for slower trips after 8 p.m., with delays that could run about 10 to 15 minutes depending on branch. The work is focused near JFK/UMass as part of reliability improvements tied to longstanding signal limitations in that area.
City issues a Feb. 27 traffic advisory ahead of Chinatown Lunar New Year events
Boston officials posted a citywide traffic advisory Friday warning of temporary parking restrictions and street impacts tied to upcoming events. One of the bigger near-term items is a Chinatown Chinese New Year Lion Dance planned for Sunday, March 1, with restrictions listed for streets around the celebration area. If you are driving into downtown this weekend, it’s a good time to double-check posted signs and consider transit where possible.
Blizzard cleanup continues as schools and transit return to routine
Boston Public Schools resumed classes on Wednesday, Feb. 25 after the blizzard extended February vacation with two snow days. City crews have been working to clear sidewalks, crosswalks, and areas around school buildings as neighborhoods dig out. On the transit side, the MBTA said it has largely returned to regular weekday operations following the storm, though some commuter rail service has required modified schedules as crews continue to restore full reliability.
