Caltrans advances proposed one-mile SR 88 improvement project through Pine Grove

A revised Phase A proposal would change about one mile of State Route 88 through Pine Grove, with potential effects on turning movements, travel patterns, pedestrian access and bicycle conditions at three local intersections.

Caltrans, Amador County and the Amador County Transportation Commission are proposing the SR 88 Pine Grove Improvements Project. The current Caltrans project record, dated July 24, 2026, identifies the work as being in Pine Grove, in Amador County, and describes the project as affecting both local and regional traffic.

What the proposal includes

The revised Phase A project would cover approximately one mile of the highway, from about post mile 22.7 to post mile 23.6. Proposed work includes intersection modifications, lane reconfiguration, pedestrian and bicycle improvements and other general highway improvements.

The named locations are Climax Road, Ridge Road and Volcano Road. For people driving through Pine Grove, the proposed changes could affect how vehicles turn or move through those intersections. People walking or bicycling along the corridor could also see changes in access and conditions if the proposal advances in its current form.

The project record says traffic operations are projected to deteriorate to failing levels of service by 2044 without improvements. That is a projection used to describe the transportation problem—not a report that the corridor has already reached that condition, and not a guarantee that the proposal would eliminate congestion.

No construction date has been set

The available record does not establish final construction approval, a construction start date, a total project cost or a final design. The July 24 date reflects the availability of the current Caltrans project record rather than a newly announced groundbreaking.

That distinction matters for commuters, local businesses and residents near SR 88. The proposal identifies possible future changes to a central Pine Grove corridor, but it does not yet provide a confirmed construction schedule or final details about how the roadway would be rebuilt.

A separate Amador County action dated July 14, 2026, affirmed that there would be no changes to property-tax allocations for the Pine Grove Community Services District reorganization project, identified as LAFCO Project No. 345. That resolution concerns community-services-district governance and is separate from the SR 88 highway proposal.

For now, the next known status is continued development of the proposed project record. The approved sources identify no construction deadline or start date.
