Black History Month events lead the day

Carrboro is leaning into Black History Month this weekend, with today’s spotlight on community celebration, arts and a busy evening lineup around town.

Honoring local Black women leaders

This afternoon’s CEF “Share the Love: Black Queens” event at the Carrboro Century Center brings neighbors together from 2 to 4 p.m. to honor Black women whose work supports low- and no-income communities in Chapel Hill and Durham. The program blends recognition, storytelling and connection in a family-friendly setting.

The celebration is part of a broader slate of Black History Month activities the town has organized, from lectures and concerts to a health and wellness fair later in February. Residents are encouraged to plug into the full schedule and support Black-led work across Carrboro.

Live music and theater tonight

Music fans have a big-ticket option downtown as “No Cocker,” an all-female tribute to Joe Cocker’s classic “Mad Dogs & Englishmen” album, takes over the Cat’s Cradle Back Room at 8 p.m. The show pulls together powerhouse vocalists from across the Triangle with a full band and horn section for a high-energy, sing-along night.

For a quieter evening, the Pulitzer Prize–winning play “Primary Trust” continues its run nearby, as highlighted on the town calendar. The story follows a bookstore worker whose routine life is upended, offering a gentle, hopeful look at friendship, change and second chances.

Town Hall and civic updates

The town’s recently redesigned website is now live, making it easier to find meeting agendas, project updates, translation services and storm or service alerts in one place. The cleaner layout, upgraded calendar and improved accessibility tools are all aimed at helping residents connect more quickly with information they need.

Looking ahead to next week, the Town Council will hold a work session at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Town Hall. Work sessions are discussion-focused and do not include public comment or votes, but they are open for residents to attend in person or watch via livestream.

Art walk and film fest on the horizon

Later this month, the 2nd Friday Art Walk returns on Feb. 13, with galleries, cafes and studios in downtown Carrboro and Chapel Hill staying open into the evening to showcase local artists. Exhibits at Town Hall and the Drakeford Library Complex are part of the lineup.

The 20th annual Carrboro Film Fest, postponed by winter weather, has been rescheduled for Feb. 27 through March 1 at the Drakeford Library Complex. The festival focuses on Southern independent films and offers both individual screening tickets and full weekend passes.
