Carrollton Area Drivers Face Ongoing I-71 Widening Work Through Carroll County

Carrollton-area commuters, freight operators, workers and residents using northbound I-71 should plan for lane and ramp restrictions beginning at 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, as crews continue a widening project in the Carroll-Gallatin corridor.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says the right northbound lane will close between mile markers 53 and 57 while crews perform drainage work in the median. Northbound traffic has been shifted into the median while the original northbound lanes are reconstructed.

What changes Aug. 3-6

The scheduled restrictions affect the northbound I-71 off-ramp to Exit 55, serving KY 1039, and the northbound off-ramp to Exit 57, serving Sparta Pike. Beginning as early as Tuesday, Aug. 4, the northbound on-ramp from Exit 55 may also close during working hours.

KYTC says a signed detour will be provided once the Exit 55 northbound on-ramp closure begins. The current advisory does not specify the detour route, so drivers should follow posted signs rather than assume a particular alternate path.

Lane and ramp closures are expected to be removed by 5 a.m. each morning. Weather permitting, this phase is scheduled to finish by 5 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6. KYTC says the schedule is advisory and may change because of weather or other unforeseen conditions.

How traffic is being managed

Two northbound lanes are being maintained through the broader work area. They are separated from the construction zone by a permanent barrier wall. KYTC says intermittent lane closures may still be needed between 7 p.m. and 8 a.m. as crews complete project tasks, including shoulder-related work.

The work-zone speed limit is 55 mph, and KYTC says law enforcement will be on-site to ensure compliance. Drivers should allow extra travel time, slow down near the barrier wall and watch for changing lane and ramp signs.

Longer I-71 widening project

The Aug. 3-6 restrictions are one phase of a larger project, not the end of the construction. KYTC describes the project as widening I-71 from two lanes in each direction to three lanes in each direction, with the stated goals of reducing congestion and improving safety.

KYTC construction records for Contract 241316 identify the Carroll County portion as beginning at mile point 52.778 and extending northeast to the Gallatin County line, with the project continuing in Gallatin County to about mile point 57.36. The contract records show work began March 10, 2025, and includes bridge work.

A KYTC progress estimate dated March 30, 2026, covering the Feb. 7-20, 2026, pay period, listed the contract at 48.96 percent complete and showed a current contract amount of $42,091,896.28. That estimate is dated historical information and should not be treated as a current August progress measurement. KYTC’s current advisory says the overall project is expected to be completed by Nov. 1, 2026, weather permitting.

What it means for Carrollton-area travel

Although the active work is in Carroll and Gallatin counties rather than necessarily inside Carrollton city limits, the restrictions affect people who use this section of I-71 for travel connected with Carrollton and the surrounding regional corridor. The combination of a northbound lane closure, two ramp closures and a possible daytime closure at Exit 55 creates added travel-time and route-planning complications for commuters, commercial traffic, local workers and residents.

Drivers should check KYTC updates before traveling, allow extra time, follow signed detours and avoid assuming that the advisory schedule cannot change.
