Centre Avenue Bridge remains closed in New Rochelle as September 1 reopening deadline approaches

New Rochelle’s Centre Avenue Bridge over I-95 remains closed to vehicles and pedestrians during a summer repair project, sending drivers and pedestrians onto posted detours. The closure began at approximately 9 p.m. on June 29, 2026, and the bridge is scheduled to reopen no later than Tuesday, September 1, weather permitting.

The New York State Thruway Authority said approximately 3,400 vehicles use the 68-year-old bridge each day. The work schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change, so the September 1 date is a deadline in the current plan rather than a guarantee that conditions will not alter the schedule.

What is closed and how long it is expected to last

The Centre Avenue crossing over I-95 is closed in both directions. The restriction applies to pedestrians as well as vehicles, meaning people who normally walk across the bridge must use the posted pedestrian detour.

The current plan calls for the bridge to reopen no later than September 1. Until then, drivers cannot cross Centre Avenue over I-95, and pedestrians must follow the marked route around the closure.

Posted detours for drivers and pedestrians

Eastbound drivers are directed to use Warren Street, Union Avenue, Memorial Highway and Huguenot Street.

Westbound drivers are directed through Memorial Highway, Division Street, Union Avenue and Warren Street.

Pedestrians should use Warren Street, Union Avenue, Memorial Highway and Huguenot Street in both directions. Variable message signs in the area are being used to alert travelers to the closure and changing work conditions.

Repairs include reconstruction, substructure work and new sidewalks

The project includes partial demolition and reconstruction, joint and bearing repairs, concrete substructure repairs, new sidewalks and new pavement.

Crews will also raise the bridge slightly to provide additional vertical clearance over I-95.

Overnight I-95 lane closures may affect highway travelers

Work is scheduled during both daytime and nighttime hours. Overnight lane closures on I-95 may be required as needed to allow crews to work safely beneath the bridge.

The shoulders below Centre Avenue are closed for construction equipment, including equipment used for bridge jacking. The highway restrictions are temporary work-zone changes, not a continuous closure of I-95. Travelers should watch for signs and changing lane patterns, particularly during overnight trips.

What New Rochelle travelers should expect

The detours are expected to remain in place through August and potentially until September 1. Drivers and pedestrians should allow extra time, follow posted signs and avoid attempting to cross the closed Centre Avenue bridge.

Because the construction schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change, travelers should check current traffic alerts before using the area, especially when traveling on I-95 at night.
