Chattooga County schedules public input on proposed nontraditional-development moratorium

Chattooga County scheduled public meetings in Summerville to gather comments on a proposed temporary moratorium covering certain nontraditional residential and mixed-use developments. The county’s Sole Commissioner issued a notice for July 10, 2026, at 10 a.m. at the Commissioner’s Office, 10102 Commerce Street, Summerville.

The proposal specifically names cargo-container homes and structures, tiny-home developments, multi-service community developments and similar nontraditional projects identified during the county’s review. County officials said the review would examine existing land-use regulations, potential impacts and whether ordinance changes are needed to protect health, safety and welfare and support orderly growth.

Residents, property owners, developers and other interested parties were invited to provide input before action on the proposal. A July 29 report from AM 1180 Radio/WZQZ said residents had another opportunity that evening to weigh in.

The county has not announced whether the proposed moratorium was adopted or rejected, and the public notice did not specify its duration or an effective date. The proposal applies to developments within Chattooga County, although the public meetings are in Summerville. The county’s Land Development Commission oversees commercial and residential subdivision activity and generally meets at the Chattooga County Civic Center, 44 Hwy 48, Summerville, unless another location is announced.
