Chicago Marks Major Weekend: Women’s Day Rally, Obama Center Update, Big Ten Tourney Set

Chicago moved through a busy and meaningful weekend, with major civic announcements, a large downtown rally, and a marquee sports event about to take over the Near West Side.

Thousands Rally for International Women’s Day

On Sunday, March 8, thousands gathered in Daley Plaza to mark International Women’s Day. The rally featured speeches, music, and calls for gender equity, drawing families, students, and advocacy groups from across the city.

Organizers described the event as both a celebration and a reminder of ongoing work around workplace equality, reproductive rights, and community safety. The peaceful march filled downtown streets for several hours before wrapping up Sunday evening.

Obama Presidential Center Sets Dedication Date

Former President Barack Obama announced Saturday that the Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park will hold its dedication ceremony on June 19, 2026. The center is expected to open to the public the following day.

The long-anticipated project on the South Side has been under construction since 2021. City leaders say the opening will mark a significant milestone for Jackson Park and could draw visitors from around the world later this summer.

Big Ten Tournament Returns to United Center

Basketball fans are also gearing up for the 2026 Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament, which tips off Tuesday, March 10, at the United Center. The tournament runs through March 15 and is expected to bring a surge of visitors to hotels, restaurants, and bars across the West Loop and downtown.

This year’s event includes all 18 conference teams, adding extra games and energy to an already packed week in Chicago.
