Church Road resurfacing starts in Wyncote as PennDOT work continues

Church Road resurfacing began Monday, July 27, in the Wyncote area after Cheltenham Township posted a notice about the work on July 24. The near-term work is expected to bring overnight construction, daytime utility adjustments, lane restrictions and intermittent closures for drivers, pedestrians, nearby residents and businesses.

What work is happening now

The resurfacing work covers Church Road between Township Line Road and Washington Lane. Milling and paving are scheduled between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. during the week of July 27, according to the Cheltenham Township resurfacing notice.

Crews may perform manhole, inlet and utility adjustments between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. The township said lane restrictions and intermittent closures will be in place during the project and warned travelers to allow extra time because delays are expected.

How the work connects to the larger project

Wyncote is a community within Cheltenham Township. The broader PennDOT project covers the Church Road intersections with Greenwood Avenue and Rices Mill Road, an area that affects travel through the township.

The township’s latest project update says traffic continues eastbound on Church Road and northbound on Greenwood Avenue. Westbound Church Road and southbound Greenwood Avenue traffic use posted detour routes. Drivers should follow current signs and traffic controls rather than rely on older route information.

The larger project remains active. The township’s posted long-term traffic plan was described as continuing through the end of 2026, while schedules and traffic patterns may change as construction advances.

PennDOT describes the broader work as a safety and traffic-flow improvement project costing $10.8 million. The plans include turn lanes, interconnected traffic signals at Church Road’s intersections with Greenwood Avenue and Rices Mill Road, drainage and stormwater improvements, and sidewalk and pedestrian-safety work.

What residents should expect

For commuters, the most immediate concern is the combination of overnight paving and daytime utility-related work. Drivers may encounter reduced lanes, short-term stoppages or changing access conditions near the work zone. Pedestrians and people visiting nearby businesses should watch for construction activity and follow temporary signs.

PennDOT has said access to residences and businesses in the project area will be maintained, including Hillcrest Center, the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and Curtis Arboretum. That does not mean travel will be uninterrupted; backups and delays may occur near active work areas.

The resurfacing is a separate near-term construction phase within the larger intersection-improvement project. Schedules and traffic patterns may change as crews move between resurfacing, utility, drainage and intersection work. Residents and commuters should allow additional travel time and check current traffic notices before traveling through the Church Road, Greenwood Avenue and Rices Mill Road area.
