Cleveland Daily Brief: Burke Airport survey, school choice deadline, winter updates
Cleveland, OH – February 26, 2026 – Burke Airport survey opens, school choice deadline nears, and winter road, snowbelt and traffic updates.
Burke Airport: City opens new public survey
Cleveland has launched a new public survey and engagement push on the future of Burke Lakefront Airport, the roughly 400-acre stretch of lakefront land that has long been one of the city’s biggest redevelopment question marks.
Organizers say they’re trying to capture what residents want from the site, including what kinds of waterfront access, economic impact, and funding options should shape any next steps. The survey effort lands as public discussion continues around what it would take, legally and financially, to close or repurpose the airport.
Schools: Choice portal deadline amid building closures
Families affected by Cleveland Metropolitan School District building changes are up against a near-term deadline: the district’s school choice portal is set to close Friday. District officials say about half of impacted students have selected a new school so far.
The selections are tied to the district’s consolidation plan, which calls for fewer schools overall, including multiple building closures beginning in fall 2026. Families can still choose after the portal closes, but district officials have warned late selections may reduce the chance of landing a first-choice option.
Winter watch: Snowbelt totals and road salt supply
Snow lingered early this week across Northeast Ohio, with the highest totals expected in the snowbelt. Forecasters said an additional 2 to 4 inches could push some spots toward about 6 inches, with cold overnight temperatures helping keep snow on the ground into Tuesday morning.
On the road-maintenance side, city officials say Cleveland’s salt situation has improved after concerns about low reserves earlier this winter. A city spokesperson said vendors increased deliveries in recent weeks, and the city has placed additional orders to help cover any late-season storms.
Quick hit: Police cruiser struck on the East Side
A Cleveland police cruiser was rear-ended around 1 a.m. at East 105th Street and Euclid Avenue, according to reporting. No injuries were reported, the driver stayed on scene, and the incident remains under investigation.
