Clovis City Council Approves Sales Tax Increase for Public Safety
The Clovis City Council has approved a 1% sales tax increase, aiming to bolster public safety funding. The measure will appear on the November ballot, with proceeds designated for enhancing police services.
Councilmember and former Police Chief Matt Basgall emphasized the necessity of additional resources to maintain community safety. He stated, “Look, nobody likes new taxes and I don’t like taxes, but I don’t know of another idea at this point to really get our resources up.”
The Clovis Police Department, currently staffed with 114 officers, has been working to rebuild its force since budget cuts in 2008 reduced the department to 91 officers. The proposed tax increase reflects the city’s commitment to addressing public safety needs and ensuring adequate law enforcement presence.
