1) Police investigate overnight shooting near Astrozon Plaza

Colorado Springs police say an early-morning disturbance at Astrozon Plaza escalated into gunfire. Officers reported hearing shots as they arrived, and a person in a vehicle leaving the area was found with a gunshot wound and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Two people were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder as the investigation continued. Police asked anyone with information or video from the area to come forward.

2) City budget cuts keep some neighborhood park restrooms closed this summer

City officials say an $11 million budget shortfall is driving a slate of service reductions in 2026, including keeping 10 neighborhood-park restrooms closed through the summer season. The move is one of the most visible, day-to-day impacts of the broader spending cuts.

Other maintenance work and amenities are also expected to feel the squeeze, as the city prioritizes core services.

3) Big traffic shift coming on 8th Street at the Fountain Creek bridge

The eastbound frontage road from 8th Street to Highway 24 is set to reopen Tuesday evening, March 3, with a major traffic shift across the Fountain Creek bridge. Drivers should expect the change around 7 p.m.

During the next construction phase, the bridge’s center lanes will close so crews can continue rehabilitation work. Northbound 8th Street traffic is expected to drop to one lane across the bridge, while southbound traffic will have two lanes. The new multi-use sidewalk on the east side of the bridge is also slated to open.
