Officers reported hearing gunshots while responding to a fight, then stopped vehicles leaving the lot and found a victim with life-threatening injuries. Two people were arrested on attempted murder allegations as the investigation continues.

City budget impacts in parks

Some neighborhood parks will have fewer restroom options this summer. The city plans to keep restrooms closed at 10 of its 135 neighborhood parks as part of broader 2026 spending reductions approved amid slower revenue growth. City staff have said the affected parks largely serve nearby residents, but the change is expected to be one of the most visible, day-to-day effects of this year’s cutbacks.

Trails and open space

The city has started a reroute and improvement project on two sections of the Mesa Valley Trail, including areas near Sondermann Park and Mesa Valley Open Space. The work is intended to move parts of the trail farther from Mesa Creek to reduce flood damage risks and protect the watershed. The trail is expected to remain open during construction, with completion targeted for late April.

Politics: caucuses this week

The local election calendar is also moving. Party precinct caucuses in El Paso County are underway this week, with in-person and online options depending on the party and precinct. For many voters, caucus participation is an early step that shapes who advances toward later assemblies and ultimately the June primary ballot.
