Cookeville’s Interstate Drive lane closures start July 6
Cookeville’s Interstate Drive lane closures start July 6, cutting the south-side corridor to one lane each way for weeks while two projects move ahead.
Cookeville will narrow Interstate Drive starting Monday, July 6, as two city projects squeeze a busy south-side corridor.
The city says the work runs between Jefferson Avenue and the entrance to Steak ‘n Shake. One project will add a new right-turn lane at Interstate Drive and Jefferson Avenue, closing the existing eastbound right-turn lane for about four to five months. The other will repair a sinking section between Starbucks and SmartBank and is expected to take about four weeks, with lane closures shifting every four to five days.
For the first several weeks, drivers should expect one lane in each direction through the work zone. The city says the closures will stay in place day and night to protect motorists and crews.
That means slower trips for commuters, shoppers, and workers who use Interstate Drive to reach Jefferson Avenue and nearby businesses. Drivers should allow extra time or take another route if possible.
