Council Tensions, Election Updates and SRP Voting Lead Mesa Headlines
Mesa, AZ – March 25, 2026 – City Council tensions rise over ICE pact, candidate slate set, and SRP voting opens with Mesa drop-off site.
Mesa’s civic scene has been especially active this week, with debate inside Council Chambers, campaign chatter online, and regional election voting underway.
ICE Agreement Debate Draws Crowds
Residents again turned out to Mesa City Council this week to weigh in on the city’s long-standing 287(g) agreement with federal immigration authorities. The agreement, in place since 2009, allows Mesa police to partner with federal officials on certain immigration enforcement duties.
Community advocates urged council members to reconsider the partnership, arguing it affects trust between law enforcement and immigrant families. Organizers encouraged public comment submissions and in-person attendance at the March 23 meeting.
The issue has become a recurring flashpoint at recent meetings, drawing organized groups on both sides of the debate.
2026 Council Races Take Shape
Meanwhile, Mesa’s 2026 City Council races are coming into clearer focus. The candidate signature deadline has now passed, locking in the slate for several districts.
Online discussion following this week’s meeting included allegations of a confrontation inside Council Chambers involving a family member of a sitting council member. While details remain limited, the exchange has fueled already heightened political tensions as the July 21 election approaches for some districts.
With multiple seats headed either to competitive primaries or potential runoffs, this summer’s races are expected to draw strong turnout and fundraising attention.
SRP Election: Mesa Drop-Off Site Open
Early voting is also underway for the Salt River Project board election, with Election Day set for April 7, 2026. Mesa voters who are eligible can use the SRP Southside Water Service Center on Alma School Road as a ballot drop-off location on Election Day.
Ballots must be received by 7 p.m. on April 7. Voters are encouraged to verify eligibility, as SRP voting boundaries differ from typical city or utility service areas.
