County Advances Affordable Housing Purchase in Skyway Marina District
St. Petersburg, FL – March 26, 2026 – Pinellas County commissioners approved funding to acquire land for a new affordable housing project in the Skyway Marina District.
Pinellas County is moving forward with a key affordable housing investment in south St. Petersburg.
Land Funding Approved
On Tuesday, the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved land acquisition funding for a new affordable housing development in the Skyway Marina District. The vote clears the way for the purchase of property that will be used to build below-market-rate homes in one of the city’s rapidly evolving corridors.
The Skyway Marina District, near the southern gateway to St. Petersburg, has seen steady redevelopment pressure in recent years, including new apartments, retail, and infrastructure upgrades. County leaders said securing land now is a critical step to ensure long-term affordability as property values continue to rise.
Why It Matters
St. Petersburg, like much of Pinellas County, continues to face a shortage of affordable and workforce housing. Rising rents and limited inventory have strained lower- and moderate-income households, particularly in neighborhoods near job centers and transit routes.
By funding land acquisition upfront, officials aim to lower overall development costs and make it financially feasible to build units reserved for residents earning below the area median income. The project is expected to move into planning and design phases later this year.
Part of a Broader Strategy
County and city officials have increasingly partnered on housing initiatives that combine public land, local funding, and private development. The Skyway Marina project aligns with ongoing efforts to preserve affordability in high-growth districts while supporting infrastructure and economic development goals.
More details, including the number of units and projected construction timeline, are expected once the land deal formally closes and development agreements are finalized.
