Crockett Advances in 2026 Downtown Revitalization Grant Competition, With Award Decision Pending

Crockett has advanced in the 2026 Texas Community Development Block Grant Downtown Revitalization competition, but the Houston County municipality has not received a grant award.

The Texas Department of Agriculture lists Crockett’s application as CDM26-0104 in the DETCOG region. Its final score was 81.537, placing Crockett third among the listed Downtown Revitalization applicants. TDA’s score document marks the application as invited to complete a Project Application.

Advancement is not an award

TDA’s 2026 project guide describes a two-stage process. The initial Community Application provided information used to determine eligibility and calculate competitive scores. Applicants scoring within the funding range were then invited to submit a Project Application containing complete project information.

That invitation means Crockett cleared the state’s first competitive screening stage. It does not mean state funding has been approved, construction can begin or the final local project has been accepted.

Sidewalks were the local concept

At a Crockett City Council meeting on February 17, the city discussed its intent to apply for the downtown program. An automatically generated meeting transcript identifies sidewalks on both sides of East Goliad Avenue between Second and Fourth streets as the concept discussed by the council.

That sidewalk work should be treated as a proposed or preliminary scope unless Crockett’s final Project Application or later official records confirm it. The February discussion also does not establish a final local match, project cost, construction schedule or funding commitment.

The City Council’s March 16 agenda included a resolution to select a grant-administration firm to assist with submitting an application for the 2026 Downtown Revitalization/Main Street program and administering a contract if the Texas Department of Agriculture awarded funding. That record confirms the city was pursuing the application process while preserving the distinction between applying and receiving an award.

What happens next

TDA’s guide set July 24, 2026, as the deadline to submit the Project Application. The agency’s stated review period runs from July through October 2026, with an anticipated grant award date in November 2026.

TDA describes the program as supporting infrastructure improvements that address conditions contributing to deterioration in a community’s downtown or Main Street area. Proposed improvements must be located on public property within the designated area. The program page lists a maximum award of $1 million.

If Crockett receives state approval and completes the required project documents, the grant could support future downtown public-infrastructure work. Residents and downtown businesses should not yet assume that sidewalks will be built, that a specific match amount has been committed or that a construction start date exists.

The city’s final application records, future council action and TDA’s award announcement should clarify whether Crockett submitted the Project Application, which improvements are included, what local match is required and whether funding is ultimately approved.
