Dallas Daily Briefing: Warehouse Reversal, School Walkout Probe, Deadly Tollway Crash
Dallas, TX — February 17, 2026 — Hutchins ICE warehouse plan collapses, AG probes Dallas ISD walkouts, and wrong-way tollway crash leaves one dead.
Dallas, TX — Good morning. Here’s a quick look at what’s shaping the news around Dallas on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.
Hutchins warehouse owner rejects ICE detention center plan
A massive warehouse in Hutchins will not become one of the country’s largest immigrant detention centers after all. The property’s owner has decided it will not sell or lease the Dallas County facility to federal authorities for use by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The site, near existing jail and juvenile facilities, had been under consideration to house thousands of migrants. Local leaders in Hutchins and southern Dallas County had warned that such a center could overwhelm infrastructure, strain public services and dramatically alter the small city’s character.
With the owner’s reversal, Hutchins officials say they are relieved and now hope to pursue other industrial or commercial uses that bring jobs without the same humanitarian and logistical concerns.
Dallas ISD under state investigation over student walkouts
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has opened an investigation into Dallas ISD after a series of student walkouts protesting federal immigration enforcement and ICE operations.
The probe focuses on whether district leaders improperly “facilitated” the demonstrations or failed to do enough to keep students on campus and maintain instructional time. Thousands of students across Texas have joined similar actions in recent weeks.
State officials are demanding internal emails, attendance policies and security protocols related to the protests. Dallas ISD has said previously that staff are instructed to remain neutral, focus on safety and apply normal truancy rules when students leave campus.
Wrong-way crash on Dallas North Tollway kills driver
One person is dead and several others are seriously injured after an early Monday crash on the Dallas North Tollway near Royal Lane.
Investigators say a Hyundai Tucson was traveling the wrong way in the southbound lanes around 2 a.m. when it collided head-on with a Land Rover Velar. The Hyundai driver later died at a hospital, while the occupants of the Land Rover were transported with serious injuries.
The tollway was shut down for several hours as state troopers documented the scene and cleared debris. Authorities have not yet released the names of those involved, and the investigation is ongoing.
