Dayton Gas Prices Ease From Yesterday, but Diesel Climbs to $5.28
Regular gasoline prices edged lower in the Dayton metro area while diesel moved higher in AAA’s August 3, 2026 price snapshot. The split gave everyday drivers a small one-day break at the pump, while freight, delivery, construction and other diesel-dependent operators faced another increase.
AAA listed the Dayton metro average for regular gasoline at $3.898 per gallon on August 3, down 1.6 cents from the previous day. That decline did not establish a sustained downward trend: the average was still 6 cents higher than a week earlier, 28.7 cents higher than a month earlier and 84.2 cents higher than a year earlier.
Diesel moves above $5 per gallon
Diesel averaged $5.281 per gallon in the Dayton metro area on August 3, up 1.3 cents from the previous day. The increase was larger across the other comparison windows. Diesel was up 30 cents from a week earlier, 60.1 cents from a month earlier and $1.641 from a year earlier.
For households, the regular-gas figure matters most directly to commuters, parents driving to activities, weekend travelers and workers whose daily routes require a car. A few cents per gallon can add up for drivers with long commutes or multiple vehicles, although individual station prices may differ from the metro average.
The diesel increase creates a different pressure point. Higher diesel costs can affect trucking, package delivery, construction, landscaping, agricultural work, maintenance fleets and other businesses that rely on heavy vehicles or equipment. Those costs may also become one factor businesses consider when setting delivery charges, service fees or prices, but the AAA data alone does not establish that local companies have changed their prices.
Metro averages are not station prices
The Dayton figures are metro averages, not a posted price at every station in the city or surrounding communities. Drivers may find lower or higher prices depending on the station, neighborhood, fuel brand, payment method and timing of the purchase.
For broader context, AAA’s Ohio average on the August 3 snapshot was $4.080 for regular gasoline and $5.276 for diesel. Those statewide figures provide context, but they should not be substituted for the Dayton metro averages when comparing local fuel costs. The clearest local takeaway is mixed: regular gasoline eased slightly from the prior day but remained much more expensive than it was last year, while diesel continued to run higher across the day-, week-, month- and year-over-year comparisons.
