DC Daily: Potomac repairs, added patrols, and weekend closures
Potomac cleanup and repairs move into a new phase
Crews working on the damaged Potomac Interceptor are preparing to reinforce the pipe with a concrete-like geopolymer lining, part of the push to fully restore the system and end the current bypass operation. DC Water says emergency repairs remain on track for completion by mid-March, and it reported more than three weeks without additional overflows entering the river. The agency also said it is expanding water-quality sampling, adding new locations to its testing network.
Heightened patrols across the region after overseas strikes
Police departments and transit officers across the D.C. region increased patrols and visibility around sensitive locations in recent days following U.S. airstrikes against Iran. Officials emphasized they do not have a known or credible threat but said the extra presence is meant to reassure the public and sharpen readiness. Riders may notice more officers in and around Metrorail and major activity centers, and residents are being urged to report anything that seems suspicious.
Downtown traffic impacts ahead of Saturday’s FITDC HerStory 5K
A weekend road-closure map is taking shape around Pennsylvania Avenue NW and nearby streets for the FITDC HerStory 5K on Saturday, March 7. Police say emergency no-parking zones begin Friday evening in select blocks, with additional rolling closures and restrictions early Saturday through about midday. If you’re driving downtown, plan extra time, watch for posted signs, and expect enforcement including towing in restricted areas.
Wintry mix triggers some delays, mainly west of the city
A late-winter mix of snow and freezing rain Monday night into Tuesday morning prompted some school delays around the region, with the slickest conditions expected farther west of I-95. In the District, impacts were more limited as temperatures rose and precipitation transitioned to rain, but the broader commute still saw pockets of concern during the early hours.
