Deadly Shooting, Storm Threat and MARTA Launch Lead Atlanta Headlines
Atlanta, GA – March 8, 2026 – Police investigate a deadly SW Atlanta shooting as storms loom, MARTA debuts on-demand rides, and metro leaders warn of teen takeover plans.
Atlanta is heading into Sunday with a mix of serious public safety developments, changing weather, and new transit options.
Deadly Shooting in Southwest Atlanta
Atlanta Police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened Friday night on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW. Officers responding to a call just after 8 p.m. found two adults suffering from gunshot wounds.
A 37-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A 51-year-old man was transported to the hospital and was reported alert and breathing. Homicide investigators are working to determine what led to the shooting. Authorities say the investigation remains active.
Storms Expected to Impact Sunday
After a warm and muggy start to the weekend, forecasters say showers and thunderstorms are likely to increase through Sunday afternoon and evening. Parts of north Georgia are under a low-level severe weather risk, with the main concerns being damaging wind gusts and small hail.
Heavy rain and lightning could affect travel later today, especially during the evening hours. Residents are encouraged to monitor weather alerts as conditions develop.
MARTA Launches On-Demand Service
MARTA officially rolled out a new on-demand transit option Saturday called MARTA Reach. The service offers shared, point-to-point rides within designated metro Atlanta zones for a flat fare comparable to bus and rail service.
Transit leaders say the program is designed to improve first- and last-mile connections and expand access in areas not directly served by rail. The service operates seven days a week for extended hours.
Metro Cities Warn of ‘Teen Takeover’ Plans
Meanwhile, officials in parts of metro Atlanta have issued warnings and temporary restrictions ahead of rumored ‘teen takeover’ gatherings this weekend. In McDonough, leaders enacted a curfew for minors through early Monday morning.
Authorities say similar events in the past have led to property damage and injuries. Law enforcement agencies across the region say they are coordinating to prevent disruptions and keep public spaces safe.
