Decatur City Schools tracks staffing, arrival changes before 2026-27 start
Decatur City Schools is in the final preparation period for the 2026-27 school year, with staffing, transportation, arrival procedures and construction among the issues families should monitor before classes begin.
In a report published July 28, Superintendent Michael Douglas said the district had eight teaching positions left to fill and was continuing to recruit school bus drivers. The report described the vacancies as a snapshot during the preparation period, not a prediction that all eight positions will remain open when students return.
Staffing and transportation remain active priorities
WAFF reported that Douglas identified eight remaining teaching vacancies as the district prepared for the new school year. The figure does not establish the total number of staffing needs across the district or indicate how many positions, if any, will still be open on the first day.
WAFF also reported that Decatur City Schools continues to recruit bus drivers. Families who use school transportation should monitor the district’s transportation and bus-route information for any final instructions. Bus-driver recruitment by itself does not establish that routes will be delayed, changed or reduced.
Drop-off procedures are changing
Families who drive students to Decatur High School or Decatur Middle School should review the district’s instructions before school begins. WAFF reported that drop-off procedures will change at both schools, but the July 28 report did not provide the specific locations, schedules, traffic controls or other operating details.
Parents should rely on final instructions from Decatur City Schools rather than assume that the same arrival routine used last year will continue.
Construction may affect the return to classes
WAFF reported that ongoing construction will be present when students return to class. The information reviewed for this article did not identify specific project locations, completion dates or access controls.
That means families should watch for school-access and arrival guidance as the opening date approaches, particularly if construction affects routes used by car riders, buses, staff or visitors.
Free lunches and family resources
WAFF reported that Decatur City Schools will provide free lunch to students again during the 2026-27 school year. Families should review the district’s meal information for current program details and any instructions added before classes begin.
The district’s website provides links to enrollment and registration information, bus routes, meals, school zones, family resources and other parent materials. Decatur City Schools also published its 2026-2027 school supply lists on June 9, including lists for elementary grades, Austin Middle School, Austin Junior High School and Decatur Middle School.

Families should also check the district’s calendar and school-specific communications for the official opening-day schedule and other deadlines.
Decatur City Schools and Decatur Youth Services held a Back-to-School Jam and Family Engagement Summit on July 30 at Ingalls Harbor. That event was a family-engagement activity, separate from the operational issues outlined in the July 28 update.
As the first day of school approaches, parents should check Decatur City Schools for final information on drop-off procedures, transportation, construction-related access, meals, registration and school-year schedules. The July 28 update describes preparation underway; it does not establish every condition families will encounter on the first day.
