Des Moines Gas Eases While Diesel Rises From Last Week
Regular gas fell to $3.699 in the Des Moines metro, while diesel reached $4.924 and remained higher than a week ago, AAA data shows.
Regular gasoline prices eased in the Des Moines metro on Wednesday, July 29, while diesel remained near $5 per gallon and moved higher over the past week.
AAA’s latest Des Moines metro price check listed regular gasoline at $3.699 per gallon and diesel at $4.924 per gallon. Regular gas was down 2.6 cents from the previous day and 13.8 cents from a week earlier. Diesel fell 5.4 cents from the previous day but was up 2.3 cents from the previous week.
Gasoline is lower than last week but still above earlier levels
The short-term decline offers some relief for commuters, households and people planning weekend travel. The broader comparison remains less favorable: regular gasoline was 24.1 cents higher than a month ago and 78.8 cents higher than a year ago, according to AAA’s Des Moines metro figures.
Drivers may see lower prices than they did during the previous weekly check, but the current average remains substantially above the level recorded one month earlier and the level recorded one year earlier. AAA’s figure is a metro average, not a guarantee of the price at every station in Des Moines, West Des Moines, Ankeny or nearby communities.
Diesel remains the heavier cost for work vehicles
Diesel’s movement is different. The average dropped from Tuesday, but it rose slightly from the previous week. It was also 85.4 cents higher than a month ago and $1.412 higher than a year ago.
Those costs matter most to trucking companies, delivery operators, contractors, farmers, construction firms and service businesses that depend on diesel-powered vehicles or equipment. Fuel is only one part of their operating expenses, so the local price data does not show whether any particular business is passing higher costs to customers. It does show that diesel users continue to face more pressure than gasoline drivers on the longer comparisons.

The Iowa Department of Transportation’s weekly fuel-price report for the week of July 27 was updated July 29. The report provides broader state transportation-cost context, while the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s July 27 Midwest data offers a regional comparison. Neither replaces AAA’s Des Moines metro average, which is the relevant measure for this local price check.
Prices can vary significantly between stations, even within the same part of the metro. Drivers trying to reduce costs should compare nearby signs, loyalty discounts and cash-versus-credit pricing before filling up.
