Detroit, MI โ February 17, 2026 โ Snowmelt-driven air alerts, a clash over Detroitโs Rx Kids cash aid, and a missing woman case lead todayโs local headlines.
Snowmelt triggers rare winter air quality advisory
Much of Southeast Michigan, including Detroit and Wayne County, has been under an air quality advisory tied to rapid snowmelt and light winds. As the snow pack thaws, it is releasing months of trapped road salt, dust, and other fine particles into the air, combining with vehicle and industrial pollution.
State environmental officials say concentrations of particulate matter have been high enough to trigger alerts usually seen in warmer seasons. Residents with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory issues are urged to limit time outdoors, avoid strenuous exercise outside, and keep windows closed when air quality is at its worst.
The advisory has been time-limited but could be reissued if warm conditions and stagnant air persist this week.
Political battle over Detroitโs Rx Kids cash assistance
Detroitโs newly launched Rx Kids program, which provides $1,500 during pregnancy and $500 a month for the first six months of a babyโs life, is drawing fresh political fire in Lansing even as it expands in the city.
State House leadership has announced opposition to continued state funding, arguing the cash assistance model is too costly and should not be scaled up. Supporters counter that the program is already operating in dozens of Michigan communities and is showing promising results, including more consistent prenatal visits and healthier birth weights.
Detroitโs participation, backed by Mayor Mary Sheffield and local partners, is proceeding for now. But advocates warn that cuts at the state level could threaten future expansion or force reductions in the number of families served.
Police seek help finding woman missing since Valentineโs weekend
Detroit police are asking for the publicโs help locating Karen Spann, who went missing over Valentineโs weekend after leaving her home on the 16200 block of Wormer on Saturday, February 14. Family members reported her missing the next day.
Investigators say Spann, 61, left home without sharing plans and did not return. She is described as 5-foot-6 with a medium build. Police have released her photo and are asking anyone who may have seen her or has information about her whereabouts to contact Detroit police or Crime Stoppers.
The department continues to review tips and neighborhood camera footage as the search enters its third day.
