Top story: Hospital parking-lot gunfire under investigation

Police in the Detroit area are investigating a late-night shooting reported just before midnight Thursday, March 5, at the Henry Ford St. John Hospital parking lot in Grosse Pointe Woods. Authorities said a hospital security officer checking on suspicious activity was fired on, then returned fire. One person was struck and treated at the hospital, and investigators said Friday morning there was no ongoing threat to the public.

City update: Demolition sites get stricter soil controls

Detroit officials rolled out tougher rules for the dirt used to backfill demolition sites, after questions about where some fill material came from. The city says it is testing soil at more than 400 locations and tightening the supply chain for future demolitions, including limiting fill to approved native sources and stepping up inspections and testing at source pits. Sites that test above state environmental standards are to have material removed and replaced; the city says dozens of sites have already been remediated.

Public safety: Arrest after shots fired into car with kids inside

Detroit police said a suspect has been arrested in a shooting that left a 20-year-old driver critically injured and put three children at risk. Investigators said shots were fired into a vehicle near Puritan and Prevost on Monday, March 3, with a 10-year-old, a 1-year-old, and a 7-month-old inside. The children were not hurt, and the case moved quickly from a search to an arrest update on Wednesday, March 4.

Court watch: 36th District Court amnesty window opens March 9

Need to clear up older court costs? The 36th District Court announced an amnesty program running March 9 through April 2 that waives late fees, penalties, and warrant costs when people pay the original fines and costs owed. The program applies broadly to adjudicated cases, with driver’s license reinstatement fees listed as an exception.
