Detroit’s $3B Budget Plan, Flooded Roads and Firefighter Health Screenings Lead Local Headlines
Detroit, MI – March 11, 2026 – Mayor Mary Sheffield unveils a $3B budget as storms flood roads and new health screenings roll out for firefighters.
Detroit’s midweek headlines center on City Hall’s next big spending plan, storm-soaked commutes and new health protections for first responders.
$3B Budget Proposal Heads to Council
Mayor Mary Sheffield has unveiled her first proposed city budget, outlining a roughly $3 billion plan for the 2026–27 fiscal year. The proposal, presented to Detroit City Council on March 9, slightly reduces overall spending compared to last year while boosting investment in neighborhoods, housing and transit.
The general fund would total about $1.55 billion. The plan includes funding for small business programs, a new retail attraction effort and expanded support for long-standing Detroit businesses.
Sheffield is also pushing to raise the minimum salary for full-time municipal employees to about $44,616 a year, or $21.45 an hour. Council hearings begin this week as members work toward final approval before the July 1 deadline.
Overnight Storms Snarl Commutes
Heavy rain and lightning moved through Metro Detroit overnight March 10 into early March 11, leaving flooded roadways and low visibility across several major routes.
Drivers reported standing water on highways and slow-moving traffic during the morning commute. While conditions improved later in the day, officials urged caution, especially in areas prone to pooling water.
Health Screenings for Firefighters
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is launching a new effort to provide health screenings for firefighters, citing elevated risks tied to the job.
The state has set aside $3.5 million over three years to fund mobile or clinic-based screenings. Local providers can begin the application process later this week. The program is designed to support early detection and disease prevention for those on the front lines.
Audit Committee Meets Today
The Wayne County Commission’s Audit Committee is meeting this morning at the Guardian Building in downtown Detroit. The regular session includes financial oversight discussions and is open to the public both in person and online.
