Detroit, MI — February 2, 2026 — The city kicks off Black History Month with a series of community events honoring African American culture and history.
Economic and Workforce Development Community Conversation
On February 2, 2026, Mayor Mary Sheffield hosted the “Economic and Workforce Development Community Conversation” at Focus: HOPE. The event aimed to gather residents’ input on job access, economic opportunities, and workforce support in Detroit. Attendees engaged in discussions about expanding career pathways and supporting small businesses to build a more inclusive economy.
Upcoming Black History Month Events
Several events are scheduled throughout February to celebrate Black History Month:
- Henry Ford Museum: Daily guided Black history tours, a vendor market on February 14, and live performances on February 15.
- Detroit Book City: Hosting its 10th Annual African American Family Book Expo on February 21, featuring over 40 independent authors.
- Detroit Institute of Arts: Offering 16 events, including live music, art-making activities, film screenings, and a workshop for educators.
- Detroit Public Library: Providing free programs such as a documentary series on Black women, craft events, a presentation on inventor Claude Harvard, and a four-part series on Detroit’s labor movement.
- Evelyn’s Midtown Kitchen: Holding a cooking class at Eastern Market, where Chef Evelyn Stokes will share her cultural experiences through food rooted in her Louisiana heritage.
These events reflect a wide-ranging and inclusive effort to commemorate Black history and culture throughout the Detroit area.
