Downtown Shooting, Olympic Rally and Fans Fest Lead Oakland Headlines
Oakland, CA – March 11, 2026 – Downtown shooting leaves two dead as city plans rally for Alysa Liu and fans pack Fruitvale for sports fest.
Oakland is moving through a heavy week marked by tragedy, civic pride and community celebration.
Two Killed in Downtown Bar Shooting
Two people were killed and five others injured in a shooting early March 9 at a bar on the 400 block of 14th Street in downtown Oakland. The gunfire erupted around 3:30 a.m., sending multiple victims to the hospital and prompting a large police response.
Authorities say at least one person has been detained in connection with the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing as city leaders call for calm and continued cooperation from witnesses.
The incident has renewed concerns about late-night violence in the downtown corridor, an area that has seen stepped-up patrols in recent months.
City to Honor Olympic Champion Alysa Liu
On a brighter note, Oakland will celebrate hometown figure skating star Alysa Liu with a public rally Thursday, March 12, at Frank Ogawa Plaza.
Liu recently captured two gold medals at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, one in women’s singles and another in the team event. City officials say the free rally will run from noon to 1:30 p.m., with doors opening earlier in the morning. Advance registration is required.
Mayor Barbara Lee praised Liu as a reflection of Oakland’s grit and excellence, and organizers expect a large turnout downtown.
Fans Fest Draws Crowds to Fruitvale
Over the weekend, hundreds gathered at Fruitvale Village for the annual Oakland 68s Fans Fest, a free celebration of local sports culture.
The March 8 event featured live music, food vendors, team appearances and longtime Oakland sports figures. Families turned out in green and gold to show pride in the city’s teams and athletic legacy.
Organizers described the festival as a grassroots effort powered by volunteers who simply love Oakland sports. For many attendees, it was a reminder of the city’s deep community spirit during a challenging week.
