Downtown Shooting, Tournament Action and Foggy Weather Lead Indy Headlines

Indianapolis, IN – March 7, 2026 – A downtown shooting, major college tournaments and dense fog are shaping the weekend across the Circle City.

It has been a busy and, at times, tense start to the weekend across Indianapolis.

Downtown Shooting Leaves One Critically Injured

Police responded Saturday morning to a shooting in the 100 block of East Washington Street, near North Pennsylvania Street in downtown Indianapolis.

One person was reported critically injured. Officers detained at least one individual at the scene as investigators worked to piece together what led up to the gunfire. The incident temporarily disrupted foot traffic in one of the city’s busiest corridors.

Authorities have not released additional details about charges or motive as of Saturday evening.

West Side Gunfire Injures Two

Just a day earlier, two people were wounded in a separate shooting near River Walk Drive on the city’s west side. The midday gunfire drew a heavy police response.

Both victims were transported for medical care. No arrests had been announced by late Friday, and detectives are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Big Ten Tournament Tips Off at Gainbridge

Amid the public safety concerns, downtown is also buzzing with basketball. The 2026 Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament is underway at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, drawing fans from across the Midwest.

The tournament runs through Sunday afternoon, marking the start of a packed stretch of college hoops in Indianapolis that will continue into April. City leaders expect a noticeable economic boost from the influx of visitors.

Dense Fog and Flood Concerns

Weather added another wrinkle to the week. Dense fog blanketed much of central Indiana Friday morning, slowing commutes and reducing visibility across Marion County.

Forecasters also flagged unseasonably warm temperatures and the potential for localized flooding as rain chances increase heading into the weekend.

From court action to public safety alerts, it’s been a reminder that early March in Indianapolis can bring just about everything at once.
