Durham Daily Briefing: Rezoning Fight, Deadly Shooting, and Duke’s Big Win

Durham, NC — February 17, 2026 — City growth debates, a deadly gas-station shooting, and Duke’s blowout win over Syracuse lead today’s local headlines.

Good evening, Durham. Here’s a quick look at what’s shaping the news around town today.

Leigh Village rezoning clears key hurdle

A major development on the Durham–Chapel Hill line is moving ahead after a closely watched vote at City Hall. On Monday night, the Durham City Council approved annexation and rezoning for roughly 81 acres near NC 54, paving the way for the Leigh Village Center project.

The plan envisions a dense, mixed-use community with office and retail space and more than 2,000 new homes over the next decade or more. Supporters on the council pointed to badly needed housing supply, on-site affordability commitments, and greenway construction as reasons to back the project.

Nearby residents from neighborhoods like Chapel Run argued the infrastructure is not ready, warning about heavy traffic on local roads and long-term strain on the area. The measure ultimately passed on a 5–2 vote, with two council members citing unresolved traffic and growth concerns.

Juvenile killed in South Alston Avenue shooting

Durham police are investigating a deadly shooting that left a young male dead Monday afternoon on South Alston Avenue. Officers responded around lunchtime to reports of gunfire near a Valero gas station and later learned the victim had been taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Witnesses described an argument between people in two vehicles that escalated into an exchange of gunfire in the parking lot. The business was closed off for hours as investigators processed the scene, and employees told reporters they fear ongoing violence in the area.

Police have not released the victim’s name and are asking anyone with information to contact detectives or CrimeStoppers as they work to identify those responsible.

Duke routs Syracuse at Cameron Indoor

On the sports side, Cameron Indoor Stadium was rocking Monday night as No. 3 Duke rolled past Syracuse 101–64. The Blue Devils used a dominant second half and hot shooting to put the game out of reach.

Freshman star Cameron Boozer led Duke with a double-double, and several teammates finished in double figures as the offense piled up more than 100 points for the fourth time this season. Duke’s defense also clamped down, holding Syracuse well below its scoring average.

The win keeps Duke near the top of the ACC standings and extends the program’s home winning streak as the team turns its attention to a high-profile matchup later this week.
