Durham Daily Briefing: Youth Violence Response, Development Fight, Teens Charged in Deadly Shooting
Durham, NC – February 22, 2026 – City leaders face pressure on youth violence, major growth plans, and public safety after a week of emotional events.
Durham, NC – Here is a quick look at some of the most significant local stories shaping the city this weekend.
Vigil highlights pain of youth gun violence
Residents gathered at a Friday evening vigil to mourn young people lost to gunfire and to demand a stronger response from City Hall. Community organizers used the event to question a new partnership between Durham and the Violence Reduction Center at the University of Maryland.
Mayor Leo Williams has promoted the partnership as a way to bring in experts who work with cities across the country on shootings and youth crime. He also announced new ‘street safety teams’ that would be led and staffed by community members.
Several speakers at the vigil pushed back, saying national consultants are not a substitute for sustained investment in local recreation centers, youth jobs, and neighborhood programs. They argued that people closest to the violence should have more say over how new funds are spent.
Council approves Leigh Village project despite opposition
Durham’s long-running debate over growth and traffic came to a head this week as City Council voted 5–2 to approve annexation and rezoning for the Leigh Village Center project near the Chapel Hill line.
The 81-acre plan calls for thousands of new homes along with retail, office space, and a future park. Supporters on the council said the project advances goals for walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods and adds long-term affordable housing commitments.
Neighbors and some advocates warned that adding so many residents near already congested roads, including NC 54 and I-40, could worsen safety problems. They also criticized the timing of traffic studies and questioned whether infrastructure will keep up with the pace of construction.
Two teens charged in deadly gas station shooting
Police continue to investigate a daytime shootout near a Valero gas station on South Alston Avenue that left a boy dead earlier in the week. Officers say an argument between people in two vehicles escalated into gunfire in the parking lot, which sits just south of the Durham Freeway.
Investigators have arrested an 18-year-old from Raleigh on a murder charge, along with a 16-year-old whose name has not been released because of age. The killing has fueled broader concern about youth access to guns and violence in commercial areas that serve surrounding neighborhoods.
Community members and business owners in the area say they are shaken, noting that the station has seen multiple violent incidents despite being open only a short time.
Looking ahead
The debates unfolding this week — over how Durham grows and how it confronts youth violence — are likely to continue in upcoming council meetings, neighborhood gatherings, and school and nonprofit programs across the city.
