Edinburg, TX — February 3, 2026 — The City of Edinburg celebrated the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros football team’s outstanding inaugural season with a special proclamation during the City Council meeting.
Proclamation Highlights
Mayor Omar Ochoa presented the proclamation, highlighting the team’s impressive achievements:
- Overall Record: 9–3
- Home Record: 7–0 (undefeated at Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium)
- Conference Play: 5–3 in the Southland Conference
The Vaqueros’ success marks a significant milestone as the first new FCS program to start from scratch in years.
Community Impact
The team quickly garnered a strong local following, averaging 12,539 fans per game and ranking 16th in the FCS for average attendance. Their exciting home games, featuring tailgating and pep rallies, were also broadcast on ESPN+.
