El Paso Daily Local Headlines: Camera vote, Scenic Drive closure, and City Hall priorities
El Paso, TX – February 28, 2026 – City Hall weighs ending license-plate cameras, Scenic Drive closures begin soon, and new city priorities are set.
1) City surveillance cameras up for a vote
City leaders are expected to take up whether El Paso should let its contract for fixed, automated license-plate reader cameras expire. Supporters say the cameras can help investigators quickly spot stolen vehicles and connect suspects to cases; critics argue the system creates broad, searchable tracking with privacy and data-sharing concerns that feel especially sensitive in a border city. The decision is slated for next week’s council agenda, with public input likely to be part of the discussion.
2) Scenic Drive and McKelligon access closures
If Scenic Drive is part of your regular loop, plan for a short-term shutdown. The city announced paving and striping work that will close Scenic Drive from Monday, March 2 through Friday, March 6. A separate closure is also planned for the road into McKelligon Canyon on Monday, March 23 for striping and raised pavement markers. Drivers should expect detours and slower traffic near the work zones.
3) A new framework to guide City Hall through 2028
City Council approved a strategic framework meant to steer priorities and performance measures over the next several years. The plan centers on economic mobility, public safety, infrastructure, quality of life, and good governance, and it’s intended to connect day-to-day service delivery with longer-term budget and planning decisions. The framework is set to roll into the next fiscal planning cycle, with the city emphasizing clearer tracking of progress residents can see.

Regional health groups received more than half a million dollars in new grant funding aimed at leadership development, prevention and chronic disease management, and healthy-living initiatives across the Borderplex. Meanwhile, families can wrap up the week with a reading-focused community event tied to Black Children’s Book Week, including activities and book giveaways.
