El Paso Pushes Back on Gas Rate Hike, Traffic Plan Advances and Marathon Draws Record Crowd
El Paso, TX – March 12, 2026 – City leaders challenge a gas rate hike, advance traffic fixes on Frontera Road, and prepare for a record marathon weekend.
It has been a busy stretch for El Paso, with City Council action, transportation updates and a major weekend event all making headlines.
City Challenges Proposed Gas Rate Hike
El Paso leaders are taking formal steps to fight a proposed increase from Texas Gas Service that could raise monthly bills for residents. City Council voted to authorize legal action and request a rehearing, arguing the hike would put added strain on families already facing higher living costs.
At the same time, the city secured an estimated $10.4 million in electric bill savings after state regulators rejected a separate request that would have increased electric rates. Officials say the combined efforts are aimed at keeping utility costs stable as inflation continues to impact households.
Frontera Road Improvements Move Forward
Traffic congestion near Frontera Road is also getting attention. The city is advancing improvements designed to ease backups tied to cross-border and regional traffic, particularly spillover from New Mexico.
Planned upgrades are intended to protect nearby residential streets from heavy through-traffic and improve overall flow in the growing area. City officials say the changes are part of a broader strategy to address development-related congestion before it worsens.
Record Turnout Expected for El Paso Marathon
More than 700 runners are expected to participate in this weekend’s El Paso Marathon, which will feature a new 26.2-mile course winding through Downtown. Organizers say this year’s event is shaping up to be one of the largest in the race’s history.
With road closures planned along the route, drivers are encouraged to check traffic advisories and allow extra travel time Sunday morning. Local businesses downtown are also preparing for increased foot traffic as spectators line the course.
