Elk Grove cooling center remains open through Monday amid triple-digit heat
Elk Grove’s cooling center is scheduled to remain open Sunday and Monday as the National Weather Service forecasts highs near 102 degrees Fahrenheit in the city.
The City of Elk Grove and Cosumnes Community Services District opened the center at the Wackford Community Complex, 9014 Bruceville Road, under a July 30 notice. The current service period runs from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, Sunday, August 2, and Monday, August 3.
Who can use the cooling center
The center is open to anyone who lacks shelter or adequate cooling at home. Residents who need a cooler place during the posted hours can use the Wackford Community Complex at 9014 Bruceville Road.
The National Weather Service’s Elk Grove point forecast called for sunny, hot conditions with a high near 102 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday and Monday. The forecast was updated Saturday, August 1, and was valid through August 8.
Pets and possible extension
The city said a limited number of animal kennels will be available for pets. Kennel space is limited, so residents should not assume that every animal can be accommodated.
The city said operating dates may be extended if similar severe conditions persist. No extension beyond Monday, August 3, was confirmed in the current notice, so residents should look for a city update before relying on additional operating days.
Heat-safety reminders
Elk Grove officials advise residents to stay hydrated, remain in a cool space and avoid outdoor activity in direct sun from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Extended exposure to hot conditions can increase the risk of heat-related illness.
The cooling center is a scheduled service for the August 1-3 heat period; residents should verify any change in hours or dates through a later city announcement.
